Battling with Anxiety during Pregnancy

Anxiety during pregnancy is normal.  It is inevitable that mothers worry about their unborn babies. People these days are prone to have anxiety due to unfavorable situations that surround us. Every day, we are faced with anxiety-provoking situations. This is why it is advisable for pregnant women not to read and listen to headline news that talks about crimes, violence and any other bad news.  Paying attention to these stories would only aggravate the pregnant woman’s anxiety.

We always hear medical professionals and health care providers say that anxiety is normal.  But, the prevalence of a lot of people with anxiety disorder has made others wonder if how much of anxiety is deemed normal. Different people have different levels of tolerance against anxiety.  This goes to say that a certain amount of anxiety may be normal for one person but not to the other person.  Unfortunately, many doctors continue to prescribe medications to anxiety sufferers including their pregnant patients.

Prescribing medications to pregnant people would only make things worse.  A lot of pregnant women are hesitant about taking medications while they’re pregnant. This is because they are afraid that these medications may have side effects to their unborn baby.  Even if the doctors say that these anxiety medications are safe for pregnant women, still this does not totally eliminate the concerned mother’s anxiety. On the contrary, instead of alleviating anxiety these prescription medications only lead pregnant women to worry more about their condition.

As much as possible, medications must be avoided during pregnancy. No matter how much they claim that these drugs are safe still there is a possibility that it can cause adverse effects to you and your unborn child. If you have been closely supervised by your OB or doctor who prescribed you that medication, use it sparingly.  Better yet, try to look for another doctor who believes that there are plenty of ways to treat anxiety and medications are certainly not the best.

If you are experiencing frequent bouts with anxiety try to take a look at your current lifestyle. Anxiety during pregnancy is usually caused by too much stress. If this is the case, find ways to lessen your stressful daily activities. It would also be wise to make sure that you are sticking to a healthy diet every day.  A healthy diet can lead to a healthy mind and body that will keep pregnant women heavily armed against anxiety. Regular exercise is also a must to ensure that you are having a healthy lifestyle.
