Post Pregnancy Incontinence
The time following a pregnancy can be very traumatic for a woman and her body. One major physical change can be the onset of various forms of incontinence. Sometimes the urge to go just can’t be helped and it is during those times that a woman is very thankful for one of the many incontinence solutions on the market today.
The final trimester of pregnancy can reek havoc on the pelvic muscles. A woman may find that these important muscles are strained well beyond the acceptable range. This is what can lead to incontinence, as it is these muscles that help control the ability to start and stop urination.
Another cause of incontinence may be due to a prolapsed uterus. If the muscles of the uterus weaken substantially then they may drop and exert pressure against the bladder. This can lead to a false sense of bladder fullness and may also lead to bladder muscle weakness as the detrusor muscle must work harder to overcome this additional pressure. The prolapse of uterine muscles can lead to stress, which means a woman may leak urine during laughter, sneezing or coughing without being able to keep it in. This is also a common time when overflow incontinence develops because the bladder remains partially full even after voiding and quickly fills gain to over capacity.
While not a permanent solution, absorbent pads or briefs can prevent an embarrassing accident. For persistent or heavy leakage it may be the case that various surgical options have to be explored. One common procedure is bladder augmentation surgery. This is a last resort and usually various pelvic floor exercises and medications (or a combination of both) are often quite effective in ending minor bladder issues.
These conditions rarely affect the overall health of a person, but the mental strain can be quite serious and should not be underestimated.
